The Role
The Archivist - RAAF Historical Records position is employed in the RAAF Historical Records Section within the Directorate of History and Heritage Services - Air Force (DHHS-AF), and is located at Fairbairn in Canberra. This Section maintains the central Air Force repository of both digital and physical records contained within the RAAF Historical Collection.

This important APS 4 position will utilise, on a daily basis, their specialist archivist skills and experience, and apply this to identifying, acquiring, sentencing and archiving historically significant and irreplaceable RAAF records. This position is also responsible for managing up to six subordinate RAAF Reservist personnel, in order to meet Branch, RAAF, Defence and Government mandated administrative and record management requirements.

The successful candidate should have an active interest in the preservation of RAAF historical records, and have good written and oral communications skills to enable effective liaison with key internal and external stakeholders.

About our Team
Whilst the RAAF Historical Records Section is a very small team, it significantly contributes to Defence capability by maintaining the central Air Force repository of historically significant RAAF records.

These digital and hardcopy records encapsulates more than 100 years of RAAF history and include operational, personnel and organisational specific information. These records are an essential point of reference for both current and future researchers.

The Section closely liaises with key stakeholders - including Defence Archives, Australian War Memorial and National Archives of Australia. The Section is managed by a RAAF Squadron Leader Reservist, and is supported by a Collections Manager (APS 4), Archivist (APS 4) and up to six other RAAF Reservists. The majority of Reservists work remotely, and the Archivist is responsible for managing, directing and mentoring these personnel.

Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for the Archivist - RAAF Historical Records position will be a self-motivated person that has relevant Undergraduate or Post-Graduate qualifications, and recent experience in managing records at the Protected and Secret level.

The candidate must have an intricate knowledge of extant legislation, policies and procedures pertaining to record management and be able to apply this in a military environment. Further, the candidate must have well developed written and oral communication skills to be able to effectively liaise with internal and external stakeholders, and also demonstrate meticulous attention to detail.

In addition, the ideal candidate must have experience in managing staff, and be able to quickly adapt to the management of RAAF Reservists - which have unique Conditions of Service. This is a very challenging but very rewarding position, and one that has the ability to positively influence the current and future management of historically significant RAAF records.
